What is the mathematical correlation between the proposed tax increase and the current debt obligation of the Sports Park?
I am guessing that it is pretty close to one to one.

Not one to one. BCIC covers part of the Sports Park.
Part of the increase is health cost to employees and duplication of administrator job description. Giving someone a deputy job title and pay while maintaining their prior duties is wasteful. This Commission supports it. It is too late to decrease expenses (i.e. supplies and leaving the lights on).
Weak leadership unable to just say no has brought us this proposed tax increase.
With a voluntary $2 PUB fee for public safety in place, Ahumada still proposes a segregated public safety taxing entity. What's next? A university hospital taxing district?

Mero,
Don't question things.
People seem to get mad at people who question things these days.

Kurgan says: Don't question things. People seem to get mad at people who question things these days.
I say: They don't get mad; they get even or lie.
Even Example: DHS supporting UTEP border security center similar to UTB only UTEP didn't sue DHS. Don't bite the hand that feeds you.
Lying Example: Longoria asserting City under his leadership has not increased taxes. They did last year, and they will again this year. Eating too many tacos causes memory loss.

On the issue of UTEP you are just wrong Wes - comparing UTEP to UTB would be like comparing teh military force of Granada to Russia.
DHS never proposed putting part of the fense through UTEP - further if you are familiar with the UTEP campus the river is so far down hill from the campus there is no fear of flooding so there is no second levee system such as in Brownsville. Further, a fense on the UTEP campus would have put IH 10 on the Mexican side of the road.
You are are not going to fix the problems in the LRGV unless we base our solutions in reality.
When UTB's College of Engineering gets a hirer rating than UT's, such as UTEP's has in the past, we can begin to compare the two universities.
Beyond your UTEP statement I think your points are on the dime.
On the issue of UTEP you are just wrong Wes - comparing UTEP to UTB would be like comparing teh military force of Granada to Russia.
UTEP = Granada
UTB = Russia
If UTB is drastically superior to UTEP in this comparison, all the more reason why the lawsuit cost UTB their border security center. Ben Reyna's objective was use his connections to Bush and DHS to secure the center for Brownsville. We live on the border on the sea. The right hand didn't know the consequences of what the left hand was doing. They sued DHS; DHS scratched UTB off the list of potential locales. UT System sued DHS too. DHS supported Arizona, McCain's home state university, to partner with UTEP, a subsidiary but not UT System's flagship. UTEP offered convenience to stick it to UTB and UT System without offending Bush and Austin.

A press release and lawsuit settlement outlines an agreement between UTB and DHS/CBP to construct a center that includes border security. DHS gave UTEP the green light to address the same issue(s).
I anticipate Congress adding to Homeland Security's budget as a means to defray the expenses of managing duplicate/overlapping centers. Brownsville should unite and protest these pork projects, i.e., the border wall.

So I got the Granada/Russian backwards - that was not the point - UTB and UTEP are not on the same planet in terms of resources and academic excellence.
UTEP had no reason to sue DHS. on the Southside of UTEP is IH 10 = no proposal was on the table threatening to fence off part of UTEP - it would have meant fencing off part of IH 10
I can assure you - had DHS proposed a fence on UTEP's property Brownsville would have had a model to follow in terms of protest. Unlike UTB, UTEP is a very important part of El Paso which garners the support of the entire community.
My point being the lawsuit had nothing to do with it. It was academics, resources, and proximity to Arizona. The border does go from California to Texas - DHS compromised on major centers in the center.
I am no supporter of Juliet Garcia but putting blame on her for this is just totally unfounded.
Bobby WC
We all make mistakes. I overlooked the lawsuit settlement which arranged a duplicate center. UTB is financing the wall as it pertains to its property. Michael Putegnat, Reyna, and others negotiating a shorter wall is no easy feat.
Brownsville doesn't need El Paso teaching us protest strategy. We have plenty of experts in this field. UTB isn't “very important” to Brownsville? UTB is crucial to the success and survival of our community. Like you, I am puzzled by some of its decisions. Regardless it garners my respect.
Jesus H. Christ! Juliet Garcia? I didn't blame her. I demand an apology for your implication.
Wes Blackmum
24 hours have passed. No apology for insulting Brownsville's capabilities and support for UTB. Further, you insinuated I blamed Juliet Garcia.
You demand retaliations, boycotts, apologies, lawsuits, explanations, etc. from all walks of life, e.g. Commissioners, reporters, editors, politicians, etc.
I demand an apology from you and the crickets chirp.
Refrain from reacting or replying to my comments. You have been plonked.
